Choreographer:  Diane McNeal Hunt

Performers:  Candy Jimenez, Amy Symonds

Two cubical platforms occupy the center of the performance area, and though the dancers start on the ground, exploring their environment in long flowing dresses, we understand that these small stages will figure prominently in the piece. The two dancers recognize each other across the space in a touching moment that will become a reoccurring urge toward connection that is part of the emotional core of the performance.

There is a certain elegance of movement that I associate with Diane McNeal Hunt’s choreography that is evident here as well, particularly in the graceful undulations and the dancers’ mirrored movements. However, there is literally an extra dimension here as the performers mount, dismount and cross back and forth over the raised cubic stages. One surprise is when Jimenez effects a carry and leaps with Symonds from one cube to the next. The separation of the cubes heightens the effect of the longing the performers feel for each other, the urge for connection, which at one point is consummated with an embrace.

McNeal Hunt gave us a lovely duet with no hard edges, a study in grace and relationship convincingly performed by Jimenez and Symonds.
