Company:  Angel Castro / HALO Movement Collective

Choreographer:  Angel Castro

Performer:  Angel Castro

Right away, we’re going to give dancer/choreographer, Angel Castro, a few extra points for the costume – which he also designed. It’s a Samurai-flavored skirt, open at the sides that allows freedom of movement and exposes his muscular legs. (Hold on to that thought – we’ll return to it later.)

The piece begins with Castro seated on the floor, back to the audience. This adds a touch of drama to this opening as he turns to reveal himself. The soundtrack is suspenseful and haunting and his movements are very deliberate in response. This has a different character than your typical angst-driven solo that is hard for me to identify. It’s serious and relatively dark but there is something in his quality of movement and pacing that sets it apart.

Remember the muscular legs? Castro has the power and the flexibility to go into a very controlled backbend and lower himself slowly to the floor, maintaining an almost perfectly horizontal position. It’s a signature move that gives him a seamless transition into his floor work, which is also quite impressive and obviously benefits from that same strength, flexibility and control.

Castro extends that control to every element of this program – the choreographic vision, the costuming and, of course, the dance itself. It was beautifully executed and he gets to own every bit of it.
