With the resurgence of interest in street dance comes a lot of proliferation. Dance companies develop repertoires around it, dance schools add it to their curriculum. With all of this interest comes a great deal of diversity. You’d be hard-pressed to say what a “real” street dancer looks like. Until you see Armondo “Decoy” Munoz. Then it’s easy. Oh, yeah – like him.

In “Behind the Mask”, Decoy delivered the street with real authenticity in a performance that reflects a personal familiarity with emotional hard times. There is a snatch of the soundtrack lyric which says, “I can’t take this no more” that he is living out on stage.

It was obvious to me that he understood the repertoire of street styles, including animation (he delivered a terrific head-roll) but he has also created unique moves that I’ve never seen before and made them fit within his own style. Many of his smooth transitions (and a graceful backbend) are elements that could have been borrowed from contemporary dance.

Decoy is an innovator, and I believe his work will only get better because he has chosen to be inclusive in his personal style – plus, he’s not all about the moves – he can communicate emotion. This is the path that performers must take on the way to developing themselves as creative artists. More importantly – the crowd loves him!
