Believe me, I’m not demeaning this piece when I call it a palate cleanser. It was a welcome relief from the emotional rollercoaster fueled by angst and excess energy that characterized so many other programs among the Festival offerings.

“Away” was relatively simple, with the large ensemble, for the most part, in various symmetrical arrangements duplicating each other’s motions. There were a couple of solo interventions but I seemed to focus my attention on the figures the ensemble created – primarily with arm movement. While I really resist using the word “pleasant” in a description (for fear of damning with faint praise) – it actually was.

Is it possible there could be an entire work developed around simple, graceful movements that weren’t masking a psyche about to self-destruct? Apparently so. Choreographer Liliana Gomez created one and I got to just sit back and enjoy it.
